Jet Boating in New Zealand

Shotover River, Huka Falls and Waikato Compared

Jet boats were invented in New Zealand specifically to navigate shallow, fast-flowing rivers, and the country's canyon and gorge landscapes turned out to be the perfect proving ground. Today, jet boating is one of New Zealand's signature adventure activities — high-speed rides through narrow canyons, complete with the trademark 360-degree spin.

What Jet Boating Actually Involves

Jet boats use a water-jet propulsion system rather than a propeller, drawing water in and expelling it at high pressure — this means the boat can operate safely in water only centimetres deep, letting drivers navigate rock-strewn, shallow canyon rivers that would destroy a conventional propeller. Rides typically last 25–30 minutes, combine high-speed straight runs with tight, sudden turns close to canyon walls, and finish with at least one full 360-degree spin. No experience is required — you're a passenger throughout, with all safety briefing and equipment provided.

Shotover Jet, Queenstown

Shotover Jet, on the Shotover River just outside Queenstown, is the country's best-known jet boating experience — narrow canyon walls close enough to touch in places, and a reputation as one of the most thrilling versions of the ride available anywhere in New Zealand. It's a short shuttle from central Queenstown to the launch point.

Dart River Jet, near Glenorchy

A quieter, more scenery-focused alternative near Glenorchy (about 45 minutes from Queenstown), Dart River Jetcombines the jet boat ride with a short 4WD leg and a guided walk through beech forest — better suited to travellers who want wilderness and Lord of the Rings filming locations alongside the adrenaline, rather than pure intensity.

Skippers Canyon Jet, Queenstown

Running through the dramatic Skippers Canyon, one of New Zealand's most striking canyon road landscapes, this jet boat covers a stretch of the upper Shotover River not used by the main Shotover Jet operation — a good option if you've already done Shotover Jet and want a different section of river.

Hukafalls Jet, Taupō

Hukafalls Jet operates on the Waikato River below Huka Falls, and is the only jet boat company running on this particular stretch. The 30-minute ride takes you close to the base of the falls themselves — genuinely different from viewing them off the bridge above — combined with high-speed runs and spins through a river valley lined with native bush and geothermal hot springs.

Difficulty and Who It Suits

Jet boating requires no fitness, swimming ability, or prior experience — you're seated and secured throughout, with the boat and driver doing all the work. It's suitable for most ages and reasonably comfortable travellers, though the speed, spray, and sudden turns aren't for anyone with a sensitive stomach or a strong aversion to loud noise and sudden movement. Life jackets are provided and required.

Practical Tips

  • Book ahead in peak season (December–February in particular), as popular time slots fill quickly.

  • Bring a light waterproof layer — you will get sprayed, particularly on Shotover Jet and Hukafalls Jet.

  • Combine with other activities for better value. Many operators offer bungy-and-jet or skydive-and-jet combo packages, particularly in Taupō.

  • If pure adrenaline is the goal, choose Shotover Jet; for scenery and a slower pace, choose Dart River Jet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to swim to go jet boating? No — life jackets are provided and required, and you remain seated and secured throughout the ride.

Which jet boat ride is the most intense? Shotover Jet in Queenstown has the strongest reputation for pure adrenaline, given the narrow canyon walls and tight turns.

Is jet boating suitable for children? Yes, generally — most operators set a minimum height or age requirement rather than excluding children outright; check current requirements with your chosen operator.

Can I do jet boating without visiting Queenstown? Yes — Hukafalls Jet in Taupō is a well-regarded alternative on the North Island, close to Auckland compared with a South Island trip.

Getting to Taupō for Hukafalls Jet

Taupō sits a comfortable few hours from Auckland, often combined with Rotorua on the same trip. A private day trip or overnight journey with Hopon can cover this route, and combine Hukafalls Jet with Huka Falls itself and other Central Plateau stops in the same day.

Whichever river you choose, jet boating delivers a genuinely different way to see New Zealand's canyon landscapes — closer, faster, and considerably wetter than any lookout can offer.
